Effective Feedback Through “Disruptive Engagement”

16:00
Presented by:
Jenny Guyat, Vet Harmony
Synopsis & Learning Outcomes

Synopsis

How effective or enjoyable are the current employee feedback practices in your workplace – if they happen at all?

The benefits of effective feedback are well-known and much discussed, with many articles available on the WHO and HOW of giving feedback in practice, so why is it that many practices still find it hard to implement these processes successfully and effectively?

The reason is that the processes alone do not help us deal with the uncomfortable feelings that inevitably arise in us when either giving or receiving feedback.

Cultivating and maintaining a culture of learning, growth and creativity in practice is often accompanied by uncomfortable conversations hence the term ‘disruptive engagement’.

Paradoxically however, a practice that fosters the ability within its team members to tolerate the discomfort needed for these vital interactions achieves a culture that is significantly less stressful, more compassionate, more effective and way more engaged.

Learning outcomes

  1. Understanding the neurobiological reasons why giving feedback as managers make us feel vulnerable and how we tend to self-protect in this area
  2. Understanding the vet profession-specific challenges we need to take into consideration in relation to feedback
  3. Five transformational processes to pick and choose from to work through with your team that will allow you to start a feedback revolution in your practice that can change your workplace culture

Implementing Flexible Working in Practice: The future is now

10:15
Presented by:
Silvia Janska, Flexee & Rachel Ryle, NHS Flexible Lead
Synopsis & Learning Outcomes

Synopsis

The veterinary profession is increasingly unable to sustain itself. 37% of vets are actively thinking about leaving the profession. The mental ill-health crisis, coupled with increasing feminisation, means that flexible working is urgently needed to create a sustainable workforce for the future. There is a strong need to establish healthy working practices. When asked what one thing vets would change about their current job, working hours came in first place.

So, what can be done about this? Flexible workability in clinical practice is key to creating a more engaged and sustainable workforce. Personalised work flexibility helps workers to fulfil their individual responsibilities and may result in improved work-life balance.

Silvia Janska will be joined by Rachel Ryle, NHS Flexible Lead to consider the many ways in which working more flexibly benefits individuals, builds unified teams, sustains a profitable business, and ensures happy patients. The follow-on workshop session shares learnings and explores solutions to overcoming the main barriers to flexible working.

  2. Discover what the veterinary profession can learn from the NHS about flexible working

Presented by:
Linda Prescott Clements & Duncan Ash, RCVS
Synopsis & Learning Outcomes
